Il nuovo pezzo è ispirato a Il racconto dell’ancella, romanzo distopico di Margaret Atwood divenuto una serie TV di successo per Hulu.

Chi è Serena Joy in The Handmaid’s Tale e il legame con la canzone di Olivia Rodrigo

I fan di The Handmaid’s Tale conoscono molto bene il nome di Serena Joy, antagonista della storia e attivista religiosa di estrema destra, appartenente a una classe sociale elevata.

Nella serie, come nel romanzo, Serena svolge un ruolo chiave nella costruzione del regime di oppressione di Gilead insieme a suo marito, il Comandante Fred Waterford.

Gilead viene plasmata in buona parte sulle convinzioni conservatrici e patriarcali contenute nei libri e sulle credenze della stessa Serena, sull’idea della fertilità come “risorsa nazionale” e sulla “riproduzione come imperativo morale”.

Tuttavia, Serena viene completamente estromessa dai piani per il nuovo governo, che non permette alle donne di “dimenticare il loro vero scopo”.

Ironia della sorte, Serena è costretta ad accettare il limitato ruolo che avrà nel regime che lei stessa ha contribuito a creare. Una volta instaurato il sistema, il potere che deteneva le viene sottratto.

Non pronuncia più discorsi. È diventata incapace di parlare. Rimane nella sua casa, ma sembra che la casa non le si addica. Chissà quanto deve essere furiosa, ora che è stata presa in parola.”

serena joy, l’analisi del testo

Nel brano serena joy, Olivia Rodrigo canta di persone che abusano del proprio potere e ignorano ciò che sta accadendo nel mondo, esattamente come il personaggio di The Handmaid’s Tale.

Olivia espone l’ipocrisia delle donne conservatrici che credono che il sistema che contribuiscono a sostenere in qualche modo farà un’eccezione per loro, per poi rendersi conto, ironicamente, che finirà per opprimerle a loro volta.

La canzone si apre con i seguenti versi: “Yeah, it’s all for the cause / For the good of us all / And if you close your eyes / Then it can’t be your fault“. Ovvero: “Sì, è tutto per la causa, per il bene di tutti noi, e se chiudi gli occhi, allora non può essere colpa tua.”

Prosegue poi con la metafora di Serena Joy e aggiunge:

“While they’re out on the streets / Man, we’re having a ball / And if they do it to them / They’ll do it to you” (“Mentre loro sono fuori per le strade, amico, noi ce la stiamo spassando, e se lo fanno a loro, lo faranno anche a te”).

Incoraggiando i fan a far sentire la propria voce, Olivia canta: “If you can’t throw a punch / You can learn how to spit / And we’ll never give up / And we’ll never submit“, che tradotto in italiano significa: “se non sai tirare un pugno, puoi imparare a sputare, e non ci arrenderemo mai, e non ci sottometteremo mai”.
